The Red Devils Set to Secure Germany Striker Lea Schüller from Bayern Munich
The Women's Super League club are finalising sealing the deal for prolific German forward Lea Schüller on a permanent transfer from Bayern Munich.
A Marquee Signing for United
The forward, with half a year remaining on her contract, has been a prolific goal-getter for both club and country. She has scored more than 100 goals for the German giants and scored 54 times in 82 appearances for her country. This signing will be seen as a major signing for the WSL side.
Departure from Munich has been anticipated after she was seen fighting back tears while applauding the German club’s supporters after a win over Bayer Leverkusen this month.
Reports in December that the German women's top flight was losing one of its leading strikers. According to multiple sources, the formalities for the transfer have now been completed.
Reliable Goal Threat to Boost the Attack
The 28-year-old’s arrival should represent a significant uplift to United’s attacking options. Schüller has been highly consistent with her finishing in Germany’s top flight.
- Over seven straight seasons, up to and including the most recent campaign, she reached at least a double-figures tally of league goals.
- She won the top scorer award in 2021-22 season with 16 goals.
Building Steam at Old Trafford
Securing the German international comes at a time when the club appear to be building momentum.
Their recent performances include qualifying for the Champions League knockout phase playoffs as a seeded team and a victory in the League Cup quarter-finals.
In the transfer market, the mid-season window has brought further activity:
- The signing of Swedish defender Hanna Lundkvist on a three-and-a-half-year deal.
- The new deal for Japan playmaker Hinata Miyazawa, a fan favourite since arriving in 2023.
On the midfielder's extension, a club official stated: “Miyazawa is now a critical part to the way we play. Her understanding of the game and technical ability allows her and the team to control and dictate play from central areas.”
The new defender, having joined from a club in the NWSL, said: “You can sense how much they [United] have grown in the last few years, playing in one of the strongest leagues in the world and performing in the Champions League.”
