The Mayor-Elect confirms plans to make his home in the iconic Gracie Mansion
The city's next chief executive, Zohran Mamdani, will opt to take up residence in the historic Gracie Mansion, departing from his rent-controlled apartment that was a central issue during his run for office.
A Traditional Abode
Dating back to 1799, Gracie Mansion has functioned as the official residence for nearly all New York City mayors after the World War II era.
However, Mamdani, for whom housing costs is a key issue, hesitated to declare this decision promptly following his electoral win in November.
"This decision came down to the security of my family and the importance of dedicating my full attention on implementing the agenda for affordability the city's residents voted for," the Mayor-Elect declared in his announcement.
Thanking a Neighborhood
His home was in the Astoria neighbourhood, a community renowned for its diverse immigrant communities and culinary diversity.
"To Astoria: my gratitude for showing us what is great about New York City," Mamdani's statement said.
"Even though I'm moving in the neighborhood, the community will always live inside me and my work," he affirmed.
A Contentious Issue
In his election campaign, Mamdani connected his key pledge – halting rent increases – to his personal living arrangements.
Yet his critics, most notably ex-governor Andrew Cuomo, attacked Mamdani for living in the rent-stabilized unit even though he is from a famous family.
Previous Exceptions
Some mayors have chosen to live at Gracie Mansion.
Michael Bloomberg, the billionaire entrepreneur, kept his residence in his own townhouse on Manhattan's Upper East Side throughout his tenure, which ended in 2012.
In his view, Bloomberg argued it should be a space for civic gatherings, and advocated for significant upgrades of the older mansion.
A Grand New Home
Upon taking up residence at Gracie Mansion sometime around his first day on 1 January, he will be surrounded by an environment a stark contrast to his modest Astoria apartment.
Featuring pale yellow exterior, green shutters, and white railings, Gracie Mansion is an ornate structure situated by the East River.
Internally, the lower floor of the Federal-style mansion is furnished to reflect the home's original era.
The estate, which is said to has several bedrooms, also includes enhanced security to safeguard the mayor and his family.
Haunted History
Past occupants have alleged that Gracie Mansion also has ghostly inhabitants.
Chirlane McCray, the partner of previous mayor Bill De Blasio, informed the press that doors occasionally opened and shutting on their own, and the floorboards creaked eerily.
Former Mayor Eric Adams was even more convinced. "No matter what anyone says," he declared in 2022. "The place is haunted in there, man."
Affordable Housing Lifeline
The apartment he is leaving is rent-stabilized, which means the city sets limits on how much building managers can hike the monthly cost each year.
New Yorkers see such units as valuable lifelines as the cost of housing exceeds the average income.
Data indicated Mamdani his rent was $2,300 each month for his apartment.
Per figures from the property website Zillow, the typical monthly cost for a single-bedroom unit in New York City is $3,500 a month.
