In a recent appearance, star Jude Law stated he “didn’t fear any repercussions” for playing the Russian leader in a cinematic adaptation. This production, however, could coincide so closely with the carefully constructed version promoted by Russian state media that, within Russia, it functions as a compliment rather than a critique.

The Crafted Superhero

For years, the Kremlin and the country's entertainment industry have worked together to craft a tailor-made version of Putin. This character is a political superhero without age or mistakes, a former spy reframed as a Russian James Bond who always knows more than he reveals.

Screen-Based Support

One recent example is a television show released last fall, directed by a Kremlin supporter. Its main character is a fictional security officer selected by fate to “save” the nation from disorder. Although he is called Mikhail, the implication is unmistakable: the hero must be a familiar security officer.

International depictions often end up reinforcing this identical story rather than undercutting it. A new film based on a popular book sets out to undermine the leader's mythology by framing him not as a cause but as a symptom, shifting the narrative weight to the political machinery around him.

The Fable of the Hesitant President

On screen, the president is shown as having been picked by powerful oligarchs to stabilise the country because he is “young, athletic and a spy”. The oligarchs approach him and all but beg him to become president. His response is that he would rather govern from the background, desiring enduring influence.

This tale is a key piece of state propaganda: the cool, reluctant strategist shaped by destiny. In reality, these events ever happened.

The Truth Behind the Selection

Nobody actually pleaded with Putin to take the job. The presidency was in essence a casting call with no shortage of contenders. Central to the selection stood a powerful businessman from the previous administration who expected to run the state de facto.

• The shortlist included several politicians, among them an opposition leader later murdered and a security service director.
• Per a journalist who studied Putin’s biography, the chosen candidate merely met the required parameters: obedient, from the security services, and politically neutral.
• A businessman familiar with the events stated the key criterion was manageability and loyalty, not strength.

Constructing the Spy Legend

Experts agree that the notion of Putin as a master operative was constructed retrospectively. Stories about his “recruitment work” in East Germany fall apart under examination. Fundamentally, he handled paperwork and technical tasks, a mid-level functionary not engaged in field operations.

Curiously, the shift to depicting him as a “007” could partly have been triggered by Daniel Craig’s debut as 007. His harder interpretation led local outlets and online audiences to make comparisons with Putin. Mashup posters swapping the actor's likeness with his appeared on city centers, feeding the growing tendency to frame him as a local secret agent.

A Propaganda Win?

Given the casting, an actor well-liked by viewers there, the Kremlin are likely to seize the opportunity to portray this choice as a small victory. The film's exclusion of mass protests, the opposition, or prominent activists in the story, even though it includes recent years, is a welcome aspect for state propaganda.

In Russian cinema, Putin is often an omnipotent figure who never appears on screen. He is hinted at through portraits or calls “from above”. Now, he at last gets a famous actor's visage—one that could unintentionally validate the very myths it perhaps aims to examine.
