The acclaimed crime series Line of Duty will make a comeback for its 7th installment, announced by the BBC.

A brand new six-episode series created by the show's creator will begin filming in Northern Ireland in the coming months, as confirmed by the production team.

Vicky McClure expressed excitement about the comeback, stating she was "so excited" about the series' return. Adrian Dunbar remarked, "What a joy it is to know that the main trio will be back filming together soon."

The last season wrapped up in 2021 with a finale that drew in over 17 million viewers. Rumors about a new season have been circulating for some time, but official word only arrived this week.

New Challenges for The Team

Series seven begins with the anti-corruption unit having been disbanded and renamed as the Inspectorate of Police Standards, as revealed by the announcement.

Martin Compston's character, Vicky McClure's role, and Ted Hastings continue tasked to tackle corruption within the police force.

The team's mission "faces unprecedented challenges", and in this climate, these officers will take on their "most sensitive case so far."

New Character and Intricate Plot

An additional officer, Det Insp Dominic Gough, described as a charismatic officer celebrated for busts of organized crime, faces allegations of misusing his authority to act as a offender.

However, his case might serve as a deliberate distraction from a bigger threat still operating in the background, plot details suggested.

Speaking about the renewal, Jed Mercurio commented: "Everyone involved feels enormous gratitude to the show's fans."

"We're privileged to have had countless followers watch the ups and downs of the unit over six previous seasons and we are thrilled to be returning for a seventh season."

Mercurio continued: "Corruption in this country was thought to be over while Line of Duty was not airing, so I've been forced to use my creativity."

Cast Reactions

Martin Compston called appearing in the police drama as "a job of a lifetime".

"Not only the program's popularity but the people I've collaborated with I now call dear friends."

"I can't wait to pull the waistcoat on again and get the team back together," he said.

The Nottingham-born actress remarked: "Obviously I'm so excited Line of Duty is returning! Eager to work with Jed, Martin and Dunbar again. The city, we'll see you soon!"

The veteran actor commented: "While anticipating the AC-12 days of Christmas, what a joy it is to know that the Three Amigos will be working together next year."

"Delighted with the announcement and anticipating those mercurial twists and turns."

Show History

The drama premiered in the early 2010s and evolved into a highly successful television series of the past ten years, featuring notable actors such as Thandiwe Newton.

Broadcasters haven't revealed exactly the new season will premiere.

The conclusion of season six brought the extended plot about the search for criminal mastermind known as "H" to a conclusion, and the creative team indicated at the time there were no intentions for further series.

Nevertheless, the corporation announced on Tuesday that a seventh series is now being produced.
