Eurovision Used to Be a Campy Joy – However It Has Become a Cynical Way to Sanitize Conflict.

A recent acronym came to light several months into the military campaign against Gaza. Known as WCNSF, it stands for “Injured child with no living relatives”. This acronym is specific to Gaza, per insights from doctors like paediatricians. Typically, it is uncommon for doctors to treat a child who has seen the death of their entire family. Yet, there has been nothing “normal” concerning the devastating conflict in Gaza, where whole bloodlines have been eradicated and the number of children who have lost limbs exceeds that of any other place in the world. Nothing ordinary in scores of doctors coming back from a devastated terrain with reports of children being intentionally shot at.

An Unimaginable Crisis Despite a Announced Cessation of Hostilities

Conditions in Gaza persist as an utter catastrophe. Vital medicines and equipment are failing to reach those in need, and major human rights organizations have stated that violations are ongoing. The Israeli government disputes these allegations, consistent with how it disavows all charges it is implicated in. But while young survivors are now suffering from the cold in improvised encampments, there is some ostensibly positive news: apparently nothing is going to stop the international singing competition from continuing with its declared purpose of “togetherness and cultural exchange.” Organizers will continue to roll out a prestigious stage for Israel, although a number of European countries have now withdrawn in objection. Because this, we are told, is what unity manifests as.

Eurovision, of course excluded Russia from participating in 2022 due to the “grave situation in Ukraine”. But the crisis in Gaza appears to be completely different.

A Double Standard

Forget the fact that Israel was accused of unfair vote practices last year in what could be seen as an effort to inject politics into Eurovision. Ignore the report that a toddler was allegedly fatally struck in Gaza just days ago. Forget the fact that aggression from Israeli settlers and coerced removal in the West Bank have escalated. Disregard the condition that global media are still denied independent reporting in Gaza. None of this, apparently, should be allowed to get in the way of Eurovision’s self-proclaimed spirit of unity.

The Pageant Proceeds Amidst Staggering Tragedy

Eurovision reaches its seventieth anniversary next year – nearly twice the projected longevity of someone in Gaza at present. The event will proceed, but it will likely never recapture the whimsical pleasure it historically embodied. An institution that once promoted harmony has transformed into a transparent instrument to provide a cultural veneer for conflict.
