England to Start Euro 2028 Journey at the Etihad Stadium

England’s men’s team will embark on their 2028 European Championship campaign at the Manchester City’s stadium, provided that they achieve the anticipated qualification for a tournament taking place in most of the United Kingdom and the Irish Republic.

The Etihad Stadium has not welcomed an England men’s game since the spring of 2016, when the visitors were defeated 2-1 in a warm-up game, but is highly likely to stage the England side for their inaugural game on a Saturday in June 2028.

The team are planned to play their last two group stage games at Wembley Stadium, but, if they top the preliminary round, their round of 16 match would occur at St James’ Park. Placing second would mean commencing the elimination stage at Everton’s Hill Dickinson Stadium.

Tournament Kickoff and Rally

The championship was unveiled at an event in Piccadilly Circus on the previous evening. Senior figures from European football’s governing body and the host football associations were confronted as they approached the venue by approximately 50 activists, who demanded the Israeli team to be expelled from international football because of the situation in Gaza.

Placards were raised with slogans stating “Show Israel the red card” and “You are complicit”, while protesters chanted: “Kick Israel out.”

Championship Fixture List

The first match of the tournament will be played at the Cardiff’s stadium in the Welsh capital, on June 9, 2028, a match that will involve the Dragons if they secure a place.

The national stadium will host the penultimate rounds and the championship match, which will be held on Sunday 9 July with a commencement at 5:00 PM.

It is expected that an afternoon start, which will also be adopted for European club finals from next season, will cater to family audiences and help reach a more diverse set of viewers.

Participating Countries

The Republic of Ireland are set to play their opening match at the Aviva Stadium and Scotland would play similarly at Glasgow’s Hampden Park.

Each host nation’s squad will participate in the qualifying tournament; two reserved places will be reserved for any that miss out on the finals through the standard process.

Locations and Elimination Phase

The Birmingham venue and Tottenham Hotspur Stadium finalize the nine host stadiums. Each one will hold at least one elimination game, with the quarterfinal matches staged at the national stadium of each host.

The draw for the qualifiers will be held in the Northern Irish capital, which was excluded as a venue city last year when it became clear Casement Park could not be renovated in time, on a date in late 2026.

Leadership Comment

“The event will be a competition for the fans and a festival of everything we love about the game – its fervor and ability to unite individuals.”

Over 3 million passes, a all-time high for a UEFA European Championship, are anticipated to be made available to attendees.
