Antony Price, Famed for Styling David Bowie and Duran Duran, Dies at 80.
The British designer Antony Price, the influential UK-based designer responsible for many legendary styles associated with artists from David Bowie to Roxy Music and even royalty like Queen Camilla, has passed away at 80 years old.
He was celebrated for his architectural shapes and performative fashion, most notably the soft-colored suits that appeared in the iconic band Duran Duran's landmark music video for "their hit Rio".
"Remembering him as a 'visionary' and a 'kind, intelligent and razor-witted friend,' the group posted a remembrance online."
This news arrives shortly after he presented his most recent collection in London, marking his return to the runway after over three decades. The performer Lily Allen modelled a dress inspired by the famous black velvet "so-called 'revenge dress'" once worn by the late Princess Diana.
An Enduring Influence
Hailing from Yorkshire, where he was born in 1945, Price relocated to London in the early 1960s to attend the prestigious Royal College of Art.
Shortly after his graduation, he commenced his career designing men's fashion at the company Stirling Copper and was responsible for the form-fitting, button-fly pants that Sir Mick Jagger sported during The Rolling Stones' "Gimme Shelter" tour in 1969.
He launched his own brand in 1979 and held his debut runway presentation a year later. The show was launched by looks from supermodel Jerry Hall, who later wore the marriage dress Price specifically designed for her nuptials with Sir Mick Jagger.
Working with Legends
A key creative partner of the late David Bowie, Price was the mind behind the iconic jacket the star wore for his "the song As The World Falls Down" music video in 1986.
His signature ability to merge tailoring for all genders along with his masterful technique in shaping body-hugging looks established him as a "one-of-a-kind talent," according to the British Fashion Council.
By the 1990s, he started creating ensembles for Camilla, now Queen Consort, which included several ensembles for her tour of the United States after becoming Duchess.
After a career spanning over fifty years, Price staged what would be his last show in London last month in conjunction with the label 16Arlington.
